What is life log for? Is it for collecting and retrieving your sweet memories? Other than that, so far, it is almost useless in research field in terms of understanding human nature, because of two reasons, 1) it often ignores brains working behind actions 2) there is no standard analytical method for describing massive data including neural, behavioral and environmental data. Therefore, people think it is just for fun, but not usable for understanding mechanism of complex human behavior.
However, we are now developing ultimate life log system in primates (ULLp) for revealing brain functions. ULLp has been developed by introducing state of the art brain machine/computer interface (BMI/BCI) technologies. ULLp collects and analyzes information about how brain is activated, what and where it looks, and how it manages body motion as well as other biological and environmental information simultaneously. For recording neural activity, electrocorticogram (ECoG) electrode array, which covered entire cortex, was applied while monkeys’ behavior was recorded by motion capture system under natural social environment.
The dataset recorded by ULLp contains almost all of information that monkey experiences during recording session. Thus, analysis is the hardest part in ULLp experiment due to the size and complexity of the dataset. We have been developing data driven causality analysis to extract meaningful modulation pattern in dynamic network structure that could not been found in conventional hypothesis driven analyses. The method will surely open the new era of neuroscience.
On the other hand, we noticed that there was a potential value in ULLp data to non-specialists who had no access to neural data, but were willing to develop useful interface. To address these demands, we started data sharing service, Neurotycho.org. Through the service, anyone can download massive ULLp data and play with it.
Combination of ULL and Neurotycho will provide ecological open platform that may support researchers in interdisciplinary areas.
